On 4th October, we successfully held our virtual Future of Lifelong Learning roundtable event. The collaborative session was a chance for both FutureLearn partners and other HEIs to discuss LLE, the use of AI and stackable credentials.
Summary of the roundtable discussion
We had an in-depth discussion on the practicality of AI to transform stackable credentials, with a particular focus on these questions:
- Can we disassociate the assessment from the learning?
- Would AI assessment free up academics?
- How else can AI play a part in redefining the task?
FutureLearn partners thoughtfully contributed to discussions around the differentiation between AI and technology and the importance of authenticity in assessment design. We also heard some excellent examples of the use of technology in higher education, such as simulation-based education through The Cave at Manchester Metropolitan University
In addition, attendees received an update from our Government team on the Lifelong Learning Entitlement which was passed into law in September. Through a survey of our learners on the platform in April, 35% of those surveyed would be eligible for the loan. With a ready audience looking to upskill and reskill, FutureLearn is able to list LLE short courses on the FutureLearn platform to boost uptake and visibility. Please get in touch if you would like to find out more.
What’s happening after the event?
We’re planning to hold the inaugural meeting of the pilot group for stacking microcredential credits across institutions, hosted by Nottingham Business School in December. We’ll also be releasing a white paper on developing a framework for stackable credentials. We will be releasing the date for the next roundtable in the new year, so please join us then.
To wrap up
Let us know your views on the future of learning and the role of AI, stackable credentials and lifelong learning. Please let your Partnership Manager know if you would like to join the pilot group on stacking microcredentials across institutions, or if you are an LLE trial-participating institution and would like to discuss how FutureLearn can support you.
There is also a new FutureLearn course on ‘Generative AI in Higher Education’ from King’s College London and an extensive library of AI courses on the platform for you to explore.
