Before a learner joins a microcredential, they must complete an enrolment journey which includes making full payment for the microcredential. We recommend that Microcredentials open for enrolment (the Course Description Page and discovery cards are published with the start date) 12 weeks before the course start date.
FutureLearn captures some basic information about them in order to register these details into the partner’s own record system. Permanent records of the learner are required in order to recognise the credit the learner may achieve and require in the future. Download a demo of the learner microcredential enrolment journey.
Basic stages of enrolment 1 -2
From the microcredential course description page, learners go through a step-by-step process in one sitting to gather this information and their payment.
1) Learner signs in or registers to have an account with FutureLearn.
2) Learner reads the eligibility requirements (input by the partner) and ticks a checkbox to validate that they meet the requirements.
Basic stages of enrolment 3 -4
3) Learner enters their personal data that is required by the university for registration. We send the partner their FutureLearn email address and ask the learner to review and change it if required. At this stage, we also confirm with a learner whether they are happy to receive marketing communications from the partner.
4) Learner goes through an ID verification process with an embedded third-party app (Sumsub) that checks that they have a valid ID.
Basic stages of enrolment 5 - 7
5) Learner reads a ‘Declaration’ that links to the T&Cs or code of conduct of the university, and ticks a box to verify that they accept these codes.
6) Learner is taken to a checkout screen and enters their billing information.
7) Payment is taken, and the learner is automatically enrolled on the microcredential, and able to access pre-reading or discussions on the microcredential page.
Eligibility
There is a fully editable eligibility checker to allow you full control over informing learners about the requirements for a particular microcredential. Accepting these requirements is a compulsory stage in the journey.
Learner feedback has indicated that this is a good moment to manage the expectations of the learner. Make it clear that they must meet these requirements or their access may be removed.
Declaration and agreement of T&Cs
Learners are explicitly asked to agree to the terms of the partner organisation, to meet contractual requirements of the partner.
Post-purchase
Partners should provide various fields about their organisation to be displayed on the post-purchase confirmation, in order to meet the legal requirements for educational services.
Microcredential enrolment report
FutureLearn collects a selection of data points that have been found to be a requirement across our partner base. The data is made available to our partners through a download in Learning Manager.
- Learning Manager>
- Microcredentials >
- Select microcredential run>
- Reports>
- Microcredential Enrolment report.
Program Learner Admin permission is required to access this data due to GDPR considerations.
The report contains all the information collected during the application process. If a learner has enrolled in the microcredential through manual enrolment, their information will not be included in this document.
It also contains a record of whether the learner has completed ID verification.
Learner progress report
Track the progress of learners across individual courses and course runs in a microcredential. Download a CSV file containing progress stats for one learner for each course run within a microcredential (each row).

- Learner progress report.
Learning Manager, Program Tutor or Program Learner admin permission is required to access the report.
