An enrolment window is the period of time in which a learner can find and enrol on a course.
Extended enrolment only applies to short courses that cannot be on demand. These special case courses contain highly sensitive topics or are highly facilitated. Their run will be limited.
An extended enrolment window makes it possible to join and start learning on a limited run course in the period we traditionally think of as ‘after’ a course. If a course has four weeks worth of activities the learner can join and enrol on the course from the moment the course is published until the enrolment window closes. The example below shows the enrolment period of a 4-week course with 6 weeks of extended enrolment.
The extended enrolment period only governs how long a learner will see the 'Join now' button on the Course Description Page. It will not change the amount of time an enrolled learner has to complete the course.

Should courses be facilitated during extended enrolment?
Facilitation is not mandatory on short courses. Special case limited run courses are more likely to be facilitated but educators are not expected to interact with learners during the extended enrolment window.
Being clear to learners about whether a course is facilitated and during which dates is key. Aligning their expectations reduces disappointment. You can also pin a note to an early step to explain whether a course is being facilitated or not.
Facilitation windows can now be added to the Course Description Page to promote to learners when a course will be actively facilitated. You may wish to include dates within the extended enrolment period.
FutureLearn is a social learning platform. Writing up your course aim for strong educator presence through conversational tone of voice and clear social prompts. Learners can be encouraged to share and comment with their fellow learners.
