Which courses are going to have translation support available?
By default, we will be providing Italian and Spanish translations of all listed short courses on FutureLearn. This does not currently include courses which are part of an ExpertTrack, and any courses which include the following currently unsupported step types:
"Assignment", "AssignmentReflection", "AssignmentReview", "AudioArticle", "GroupReflection", "GroupShowcase", "GroupTask", "PeerGrade", "PeerGradedAssignment", "PortfolioTask", "TutorMarkedAssignment"
We are not currently providing translation support on any course which is part of a degree or microcredential programme.
The FutureLearn website, including settings pages, registration, CDPs, search pages, course titles, and site navigation tools are not being translated for now. Only in-course content and navigation tools (e.g. the mark as complete button, next step button) will be translated when this feature is first released.
When is this feature going to be released to learners?
We plan to release this feature on the 11th of May 2026, with an official announcement going out on the 13th of May 2026. The feature will first be released for Italian, then Spanish in the weeks following the Italian translation support being released.
Can I switch off translation for my course/s?
Yes, please let your PM know which course/s and we will remove the translation support for that course/ those courses.
How is the translation generated?
The translation is being generated via Amazon Bedrock's artificial intelligence software. You can read more about this in our product update post here - New study tool to be launched on FutureLearn
Can I edit the translation?
Yes, in Course Creator. Once you are in the 'Content' tab of a course run, a small globe icon will appear in the top right, under the tab view selection.
Once you click on the globe, the currently supported language options for that course will appear in a drop-down.
To change language, simply click on the initials for that language from the drop down. The language of the course content will be automatically switched to your selection.
All of the tools and language for course building will remain in English, but all of the editable text content for the course step will be translated. This text reflects the translation of that step that appears in the course itself, if the user has switched their language preference from English.
Example of how the translated content appears in Course Creator vs for the learner
You can edit the translated content in Course Creator, by selecting 'edit [step type]' for that step. To save any edits, select 'update [step type]' at the bottom of the step. Any saved changes will automatically be reflected in the live course, visible to the learner.
Edits to the original, untranslated, content will not be automatically translated. When we switch on translation support for a course run, the content that is translated will be that of whichever version is published for that run at the time of the translation being processed.
If we make an update to the overall translation integration, we may need to re-run the translation. Edits made to the translated content may be lost if the translation is re-run.
Can I leave feedback about the translation integration?
Yes, you can use the Support button at the bottom of Course Creator to contact our Partner Support team, or you can email partnersupport@futurelearn.com, or you can contact your PM.
