Audio steps allow for uploading of short audio clips in MP3 format only.
Creating an audio step
To add an audio step, select the activity in Course Creator and first selecting '+ Add a Step' then selecting Audio from the dropdown list.
Upload your audio file (.MP3) and add a title, any copyright information and text.
All audio steps require a PDF transcript for accessibility.
We use a service called Vzaar for the hosting of audio and video. Vzaar does not encode audio files but plays them to the standard at which they were recorded. Audio should be 44.1KHz or 48KHz, 16-bit stereo.
Please ensure that audio levels (for both audio and video) are consistent across the media recorded for your course to save learners having to constantly reach for the volume control.
We suggest working with the R128 standard supported by the European Broadcasting Union, where audio levels are normalised to 23 LUFS:
For more background on this standard, how it relates to previous ways of measuring average sound level, and software that supports it, see http://productionadvice.co.uk/lufs-dbfs-rms/.
You should also offer an accompanying PDF transcript which learners can download from the ‘related links’ at the bottom of the step.
The PDF must be an accessible document (see guidelines for creating accessible PDF documents). To ensure accessibility, we encourage you to use this FutureLearn-branded Word document to create your transcripts, and then convert to a PDF file.
