It's important that all image content on the FutureLearn platform is the correct size and resolution, both to maintain the quality of the FutureLearn experience, as well as ensuring the quality of the course content, and the integrity of the university creating the course.
In order to maintain consistency across the FutureLearn product we have created these guidelines to support partners as they produce image content.
Note: All course images and partner logos must be run past a FutureLearn designer before being uploaded via course creator. This is to ensure both quality and technical requirements are met.
Partners are required to deliver:
- One partner logo
- One partner hero image
- One image for each course
- One image for each activity within a course (optional)
- One image for each step within an activity (optional)
Please note that the imagery in this document is not to scale – unless otherwise stated. Please also note that although it is strongly advised to provide imagery that is cropped to the exact dimensions listed within, images that adhere to or are above the minimum width will be suitable, but will be cropped by the platform automatically.
Partner logo image
Please provide FutureLearn with your logo in a vector format: EPS, AI, SVG or Photoshop Custom Shape. This is the logo that will appear on the partner landing page, and the course product page(s).
We ask for the logo in a vector format so that the image can be resized across a variety of applications on our site without loss of quality (bitmap images such as JPEG, PNG, BMP can appear pixelated if they need to be enlarged beyond their original size).
NOTE: Please do not create your EPS, SVG, etc file by converting or exporting a bitmap file. The resulting file will not be a 'true' vector file, and cannot be used on the FutureLearn site. Where possible, please create your vector logo file from an original vector file format. This will retain the scalability and quality we need.
Partner hero image
This is the image that features at the top of the partner landing page.
Please note that throughout the FutureLearn platform on mobile devices, images will be positioned to the full width of the screen, but cropped similarly to desktop and tablet. These images should not have logos or watermarks overlaid on them as these may be cropped when viewing on certain devices.
Course images appear on our various course index pages, at the top of the course description page, and on all public open step pages. It will also be used for any marketing and promotional media.
Providing your own
If you are providing your own image, please supply FutureLearn with an image at a minimum dimension of 1600 x 1066 px (a ratio of 3:2) and be sure to keep your most important content in the centre. Images should not contain watermarking or include logos, including that of the partner.
Please note, on pages where the image is cropped, the platform will do this automatically.
Licensing Getty course images
Alternatively, FutureLearn can help select a course image for your course landing page from our preferred provider, Getty Images (at no additional charge to you).
You may wish to re-use that Getty course image for your own marketing activities in relation to your FutureLearn course. Certain types of re-use are permitted, subject to the below terms and conditions.
Please be aware that by downloading your Getty course image through FutureLearn you warrant and represent that you are acting directly on behalf of the relevant FutureLearn partner organisation, and you have the legal authority to bind that partner organisation and confirm that by downloading the Getty course image through FutureLearn, you have read, and your organisation gives FutureLearn full legal authority to bind your organisation to, the terms of the Getty Images licence agreement (as updated and amended by Getty Images from time to time). Your organisation further agrees that it will only use the Getty Images content in accordance with the Getty Images licence agreement and will accordingly indemnify, defend and hold harmless FutureLearn in respect of any damages, liabilities and expenses arising in connection with any breach or alleged breach by your organisation of the Getty Images licence agreement.
Crop guides and templates
Course images are cropped on various pages across the site to suit the page design. You do not need to supply additional images for these crops as it is done automatically by the platform.
A downloadable Photoshop template showing these crops can be downloaded and used as a guide.
Course description page
On course description pages the course image appears at the top of the page. Some the image on the left and right is cropped to give it a squarer format.
Course description page – mobile view
In the mobile view on course description pages the top and bottom are cropped off the image to give it a more horizontal format.
On open-step pages the course image appears full-width lower down the page. The top and bottom are cropped off the image to give it a more horizontal format, similar to that of the mobile view on course description pages.
Please be aware that we apply a 43% black (#000000) overlay on each image on open-step pages.

Alternative ‘billboard’ image
If you cannot make your image adapt to all crops in the PSD template above, you may upload an additional ‘billboard’ image for your course. We recommend a width of 1600px, and a height of 500px. This image will also be used on the open step and statement pages.
Here are a few suggestions for images that work well:
- Simple bold, striking images;
- Close up shots, with focus/subject positioned centrally;
- Images that we can effectively apply a dark overlay to if needed.
- Images that don’t contain text that is critical to understanding (as we often overlay text on top of these images)
To do list images
These are the images that appear within each week of the To do list. (Fig 7). They are referred to as 'activity images' in Course Creator.
You will need to upload: 1 Activity image per activity – dimensions 442px x 295px 72 dpi, RGB
These are the images that appear at the top of each step content page. (Fig 8).
You will need to upload: 1 Step image per step (optional) – dimensions 900px x 600px 72 dpi, RGB

These are the images that can be inserted within the text content on course step pages.
Please note: all images will be scaled to the full width of the text area. Unlike the step hero images above, they will not be cropped.
