Inline images are images that are contained within the body of a step and can be uploaded as an asset to any article step.
Once an asset has been uploaded, you can reference it on other steps within the course – not just the step on which you originally uploaded it. This includes Video, Audio, Discussion, Assignment, Exercise, Quiz and Test steps.
How to add an inline image
Inline images are automatically scaled to be 648 pixels wide, covering the full width of the step. For this reason, any image file you upload must be at least 648 pixels wide. Please ensure you crop/resize your images for the web before uploading, as the bigger the size of the image, the longer your step will take to load for learners to view.
For a visual demonstration of adding an inline image please see the video below:
Alternatively here are step-by-step instructions:
- When editing any article step you will see the following:
2. Click the ‘Choose file’ button to select the image you want to upload and then click Upload.
3. Once the image has been uploaded, you will be presented with the image URL (highlighted in pink in the image below). Copy this to your clipboard.
You can now insert this image into the step itself by adding the correct formatting in the ‘Article content’ box, if in an article step, or the ‘Body’ box in other step types.
The correct formatting to use is:
![Alt text for screen readers](https://ugc.futurelearn.com/uploads/assets/paste/the/url-here.jpg "Optional image title")
Here's an example:
This is how the image will appear to learners:
4. Captions can also be added in inline images by inserting the following:
<br>e.g. caption for image
If there’s an important detail within the image you would like to make more visible to learners, you can use this formatting text to make the image expandable:
[![Descriptive alt text for image](https://location/of/image/small_image.jp)](https://www.futurelearn.com/location/of/image/large_image.jpg) **Caption for image** [(Click to expand)](https://www.image-location/large_image.jpg)
You will need to upload two image assets to make this work. The inline image should be 900 x 600 pixels, and the expandable image can be up to 1200 x 800 pixels.
