During enrolment on a Microcredential learners can be asked to complete an ID verification process using a third party service called Jumio.
ID Validation with Jumio
Jumio is our ID verification partner. It is a market leader in this process, working with other big organisations such as Airbnb and Monzo. The process involves us sending a learner off-platform, where they are asked to send an image of their ID and a selfie. Jumio then verifies that the ID is a valid format, that the image shows the same person and sends us this information back.
We receive a success/fail response, which is included in a CSV download via Learning Manager. If the learner has successfully verified their identity, the CSV entry will be ‘True’. If ‘False’, the learner has either not attempted verification or has failed ID verification via Jumio.
Skipping ID Verification
The ID verification step will be enabled by default, but you can choose to remove it from the enrolment journey if you wish. To do so, just ask your Partnership Manager. If you choose to remove it, please ensure you encourage learners on your microcredential to verify their ID at a later stage if necessary.
If you decide to enable ID verification in the enrolment journey, it will be shown to learners as an optional step, so they will have the option to skip it. We will remind learners to attempt ID verification - either if they have skipped it, or if you’ve chosen not to show the step - both immediately after payment and in the post-purchase VAT receipt email.
FutureLearn allows learners to skip this step currently as we are aware that some learners may have challenges using Jumio, either because of the ID type that they have available vs what Jumio accepts, or possibly because of their access to a webcam. We are continuing to monitor how learners experience this process.
If a learner fails the Jumio process, or does not attempt verification, the partner should follow up with them if it is a necessary part of the enrolment experience. We know that for some partners it is critical, and others less so.
Ensuring a learner has completed ID verification
You will be able to see the status of the ID verification for each learner in the CSV, and can choose how best to follow up.
One option is to contact the learner and ask them to attempt to use our Jumio integration to verify.
You can send them the following link, which will direct them to Jumio to attempt verification here: https://www.futurelearn.com/verification/new
Another option is to verify their ID off-platform. If a learner has failed the verification on Jumio, or is having other problems with it, this may be necessary. It is important to have a workaround for those learners who do not manage to use Jumio, especially if it is a necessary step for enrolling at your organisation.
