Creating a discipline
Multiple degrees can be held within a discipline. For example you may have an MA, PGDip, and PGCert in Project Management and these degrees would sit within one overarching Project Management discipline.
For example Deakin University’s Digital Learning Leadership:
Organisation Admins can create a discipline by selecting the ‘Degrees’ tab in Course Creator and selecting ‘Create new discipline’:
The information added to this area will populate the degree discipline page, you can view examples of these here.
Most of the fields on the ‘Create new discipline’ page are self explanatory and have a sentence or two of guidance included to provide context. However, here is some additional information you might find useful when creating a discipline:
Open for applications – If you are ready to start accepting applications for the degree check this box, if not this can be checked later on.
Display this degree discipline in degree discipline listings – Ensure that this box is ticked otherwise the degree will not be displayed at https://www.futurelearn.com/degrees.
When filling out the section labelled ‘Why join this degree?’ you may wish to engage your marketing team for help with the copy.
Adding a promotional trailer – Currently there is no ‘upload degree trailer’ function, instead you can add a trailer for your degree by uploading the video to a sandbox course and informing your partnership manager. Your partnership manager will then add a link to the description field shown above so that the trailer appears on the discipline page. You’ll need to take into account the 41 character URL that will need to be embedded when writing your degree description of 600 characters. The URL will have the format: <http://view.vzaar.com/xxxxxxxx/video/hd>
External enrolment URL – This URL will be the destination for a ‘Study at [Your University]’ button on the degree discipline page. This link should be hosted on your university website and it should take learners to a page that talks generally about taking a degree on FutureLearn.
If this box is left empty the button will not appear.
Entry requirements – Does not feed anywhere learner facing so can be left blank, entry requirements should be added at degree level rather than discipline level.
Taster courses – We recommend that each program of a degree contains at least one ‘taster’ or open course. These courses are available on the upgrade model and accessible by a wider global cohort. As well as forming part of a degree for fee-paying students these also help widen your recruitment funnel by giving learners a flavour of what the degree is to encourage them to become fee paying students. Ask your Partnership Manager to add your taster course to the discipline page.
Copywriting and SEO
Once you’ve filled in the details on your degree discipline page let your partnership manager know at least two weeks before the publication of the page. If confirmation is not provided content will be locked down two weeks before publication regardless.
FutureLearn’s copywriters will take a copy of your content and provide a suggested version optimized for SEO including evidence about keywords which will be shared by your partnership manager with you for approval.
Once you have reviewed and approved these changes contact your partnership manager who will update your degree discipline page.
